Paintings sent by email to family and friends, and posted on Instagram — from a dory on the Colorado River to the lava fields of Fagradalsfjall and the Deschutes River canyon at home.

John is an architect, painter and poet. He lives in Central Oregon and goes back often to Iceland, where his family comes from.
He paints mostly in watercolor, and often on the spot: beside a spring deep in the Grand Canyon, inside an extinct Icelandic volcano, in a kayaking sketchbook on Vargas Island. For more than twenty years he has sent the results to family and friends by email, usually with a few lines about where he was, and often with a poem.
The Grand Canyon Suite comes from a seventeen-day dory trip down the Colorado River in October 2022. The Fagradalsfjall series comes from his hikes to the eruption in Iceland in 2021.
His poems are signed j.b.hermannsson, his portraits Jón Steingrímsson, and his political cartoons GOOOGLEHOPF. He posts new work on Instagram at @goooglehopf; the cartoons live at pacbrewlab.com/cartoons.
