Where the guides disagree, and why

U.S. House, District 11 — the headliner

The open Pelosi seat is a Democrat-on-Democrat general between State Senator Scott Wiener and Supervisor Connie Chan. Wiener has the Chronicle, both Democratic parties, GrowSF, YIMBY, Sierra Club, Toklas and Courage California (8 of the guides here). Chan has labor (SEIU 1021, Labor Council, teachers), the League, Milk Club, Tenants Union, SF Rising, the Greens and the Women's Political Committee (9). The smaller Democratic clubs split the same way. This is the one race where the consensus is a coin flip.

Insurance Commissioner — Ben Allen vs. Jane Kim

Another Democrat-vs-Democrat contest. The moderate guides, both Democratic parties, Sierra Club and the Chronicle back State Senator Ben Allen as the steady hand for a fragile insurance market. The progressive guides plus the Women's PC back former Supervisor Jane Kim and her public-option insurance plan. Allen 6, Kim 6.

Prop 40 (billionaire tax) and its poison pills, 41 and 42

The state Democratic Party, Toklas, Women's PC and every progressive guide say Yes on 40. GrowSF says No, and the SF Democratic Party broke with the state party and voted No. Props 41 and 42 were written to cancel 40 if they get more votes: nearly everyone, including the Chronicle, says No on both; GrowSF alone says Yes. If you vote Yes on 40, vote No on 41 and 42 or you may cancel your own vote.

Props 43 and 45 — Prop 13 expansion and CEQA reform

Prop 43 (higher thresholds for local special taxes) and Prop 45 (CEQA streamlining) are No across the board except GrowSF, which is Yes on both. Sierra Club singled out 39, 43 and 45 as its three No votes.

Props A, D, E, F — the mayor's governance package

The cleanest left/right line on the ballot. Moderates (Chronicle, SF Dems, GrowSF, SPUR, YIMBY, Blueprint, Toklas) say Yes to all four. Progressives, the League of Women Voters and the Women's PC say No to all four, arguing D prices community groups out of the initiative process (signatures rise from 2% to 8% of voters) and E/F concentrate power in the Mayor's office. Net: A tips Yes 9–8; E (8–9), F (7–9) and D (7–12) tip No.

Prop B — public bank

Flips the usual alliances: the SF Democratic Party, Toklas and the League of Women Voters join every progressive guide for Yes (13); the Chronicle, GrowSF, SPUR, Blueprint and the GOP say No (5).

Prop I — transfer-tax set-aside for housing

Progressives, Sierra Club, Women's PC and LWV say Yes (10). The Chronicle ("a cocktail of poison pills"), Mayor Lurie, SF Dems, GrowSF, SPUR, YIMBY, Blueprint and Toklas say No (8). Prop C, the Housing Trust Fund increase, is the housing measure everyone except the GOP agrees on.

Props H and RTM — transit funding

Both are near-unanimous Yes. Only the Republican Party opposes both, and Blueprint SF opposes the Muni parcel tax (H). Muni faces a roughly $300 million annual deficit without them.

Prop G — cars on the Great Highway

No from every guide that took a position except the Republicans. Several progressive guides sat this one out.

School Board and City College — two slates

Board of Education: the moderate slate is Phil Kim, Autumn Brown Garibay and Tim Tung; the labor/progressive slate is Virginia Cheung, Reina Tello and Ryan Hazelton. Toklas and Women's PC mix: Kim, Fisher, Brown Garibay. Phil Kim is the only candidate on both sides. City College: Ball, Lace and Tam (moderates) vs. LaCroix, McFadden and Jeremy Lee (progressives and labor).

Still "coming soon"

As of October 6 the Chronicle had not published calls on Governor, Props 2, 5, 39, 40, 43 and 45, Supreme Court retention, SF Props F and J, the supervisor races, or the school and college boards. The Bay Guardian and Juanita MORE! had not released November guides.

Every guide, every call

Hover a column header for the full organization name. Grey = no position found; "none" = the guide explicitly made no endorsement; "soon" = the Chronicle lists it as coming soon. Y* = Women's PC supports Prop 37 with reservations. The SF Democratic Party adopts the state party's positions on state props except Prop 40.
