Nueroplasticity is my, as well as other Traumatic Brain Injury survivor’s, best friend. As a result of nueroplasticity (a relatively new discovery) being now known, scientists have learned that we can in-fact resurrect hidden knowledge that formerly appeared lost. This is wonderful news, as my critical Traumatic Brain Injury necessitates the building of new neural pathways to reach the information which formerly accessed alternatively. This reality is shared by of some moderate, all Severe and all other critical TBI survivors.

The difference in the grandeur of recovery due to the severity of Traumatic Brain Injury incurred, not only lay in how strongly we accept this massive challenge and work to relearn EVERYTHING. Largely too, the difference lies in how all-encompassing our recovery is. As I’ve mentioned repeatedly, I was incredibly fortunate to have a devoted personal care team, which included 2 professional teachers (I love knowledge and resultantly those that facilitate retrieving it)! I was raised bias, what with my mom & primary love being a 4th grade teacher, the predominance of my life. My care team enabled my recovery largely for the first 1.5 years (while I lived w/ my parents) & my needs descended in grandeur with time.

Again, astounding patience is needed, which is nearly impossible to come by in early recovery (science & resultantly doctors attest). Thank goodness for the ample external help I had & have!

The national library of medicine aserts that “TBI population studies revealed that the prevalence of TBIs in adults over 18 was 8.5%… In 2010, 2.5 million emergency department visits were associated with TBI”. It goes on to state that as of 2010 TBI was related to 30% of mortalities.

With the proliferation of US residents who use of cars (the primary cause of suffering a TBI) as transportation, the % of Americans with TBIs has inevitably grown substantially. Henceforth, this is a mighty substantial national problem, as well as one for the grander populous of the developed world.

The tough part it, is that primary previous friends of ours (survivors) encounter us solely (because they flee after the resultant drama amidst our initial 10 year healing phase). If a survivor has great friends as I do/did, they’re primarily on it! In these first 10 years, we’re amidst all-encompassing healing (relearning to live) and henceforth have the attitude and abilities of a child + immense irritability (can you imagine!). I haven’t yet reached my 10 years (which is solely the 1st stage of healing, amidst this life-long healing process). The vast majority of my friends have fallen off.
