I believe that both wisdom and smartness are equally valuable. I have qualms with the observed fact, that in our present society, this equality doesn’t seem to be accepted by all. I think that the 2 different ways of processing I’ve identified, simply have perfected different skill sets (likely through relevant experience).
I find simple truth in the saying: practice makes perfect.
My, personal, definitions:
People that are “smart” gained their knowledge through books, and/or as was relayed to them in a classroom setting. They know more facts, no doubt. There’s ample value in that.
People who are “wise”, gained their knowledge through experience. This real-life experience prepares their knowledge to be more varied and flexible. There is value in this as well.
——-
I consider wise people, to have more advanced social skills, (something that can’t be taught in books) which includes, the willingness to admit when they’re wrong. They recognize the value in this = identifying what can be learned. I think, no doubt, we’re all wrong (illogical) at times.
Wise people are aware, when it’s appropriate to make a certain comment, and who will accept it + how to present it in a way that it will be accepted by the recipient.
In my college study of PR, I learned, that you never gain traction when speaking to “a brick wall” – someone who’s previously decided what they believe & is unwilling to consider alternatives.
PR is very people centric (your goal as a PR ((public relations)) person, is to move/influence people) This aim tends to seem most valuable to me. After all, what makes a bigger change/impact than altering people’s beliefs?
I have witnessed individuals displaying both the wisdom & smartness strong-suits, in tandem. I look up to this ability. But… 🙂 everyone has a preference. It’s like being left or right handed. You can claim ambidexterity (impressive) but, let’s be real, there’s a side you default to/ prefer.
Though I believe I’m well-founded in this observance, if you’ve got a well-founded counter argument –> I welcome it.
